Other Writers

The Thompson Writing Program supports all writers, not just our students and faculty. We provide resources to Duke staff, as well as residents outside our campus. We also work closely with our alumni who bring their own expertise to our program to help our students.

Writing Studio

The TWP Writing Studio is dedicated to working with writers within the broader Durham community. We facilitate writers' critical and creative thought through collaborative, non-evaluative consultations, workshops, writing groups, and events. In all of our work, we actively seek to support diverse, inclusive writing communities.

Our consultants can help at any stage of your writing process – from brainstorming and researching to drafting, revising, and fine-tuning a final draft.

Duke Reader Project

We invite members of the broader Duke community to play a direct role in our students’ education. The Duke Reader Project pairs students in participating courses with a Duke alumnus/alumna or employee who has professional expertise and interest in their writing project.

By participating in the Duke Reader Project, you can help our students develop the communication and reasoning skills that are essential for their success in both professional and civic life.

Faculty Write Program

The Faculty Write Program offers writing retreats and writing groups that are open to writers from other universities and community organizations. The annual Engaged Scholar Writing Retreat in collaboration with North Carolina Campus Compact brings together faculty, graduate students, and their community partners. The How I Write interview series invites writers within and beyond university contexts to share their writing stories with Duke and the broader community.

Resources

Our online resources – typically accessed by our students and faculty – are also available for all writers. Simply browse through our variety of papers, guides and weblinks, then download those of interest to you.

Community Outreach

Since 2007, the TWP Writing Studio has participated in several community outreach projects in Durham. Our volunteers are Writing Studio consultants – both graduate and undergraduate students.

Past projects have included in-service teacher training at Riverside High School and Durham School of the Arts (DSA), one-on-one consulting with students in DSA's "Academic Literacy" course, in-class workshops and handout development at Riverside, consulting support for the Durham Public Library's youth writers' program ("Write On!"), and the training of undergraduate mentors to work with students at Githens and Rogers-Herr middle schools in the Science Writers' Investigative Field Trips (SWIFT) program.
