What constitutes writing? What makes it 'good'? Why study writing? History of Writing Studies explores the development of writing studies as a field, from its roots in ancient rhetoric to more contemporary understandings of writing in a digital age. The course presents ways in which writing has been described, analyzed, debated, and taught, following the understanding of writing from linear to recursive, from a contextualized process to a social process. As we move through the trajectory of the discipline, students will write regularly and extensively, personally and academically, as they engage with evidence-based best practices of writing, such as drafting, revising, and workshopping.
