The Duke Reader Project pairs students in participating courses with a Duke alumnus/alumna or employee who has professional expertise and interest in their writing project. By participating in the Duke Reader Project, members of the broader Duke community can play a direct role in helping our students develop the communication and reasoning skills that are essential for their success in both professional and civic life.

Alumni/ae can find additional opportunities to support Duke students at Duke Alumni Association (DAA).

Students

Duke students have the opportunity to receive feedback on a class writing project from someone outside the classroom setting who has professional experience relevant to their project. This feedback helps students learn to anticipate the needs and expectations of readers, and to revise their writing to make it more effective for the intended audience.

If a course is a good fit for the Duke Reader Project, instructors can enroll the course to make this opportunity available to their students. Instructors who are interested in enrolling their course for the first time, meet with the Duke Reader Project director and/or coordinator to decide if the course’s writing assignments are appropriate for the Duke Reader Project.
